Media and Communications in Transition Societies

The global economic and geo-political emergence of BRICS countries (particularly China and Russia), specific social, political and economic problems of Central and Eastern European countries within the European Union, and the particular challenges of post-communist and post-authoritarian democratic transformation in several regions of the world present many new angles and substantial research questions for media and communication studies.

A related scholarly challenge is presented by the fact that most theoretical concepts regarding media research had been developed in democratic American and Western European contexts, and their application to problems in emerging countries and transition societies may be problematic.

To tackle these challenges we have established this research priority area at the Department to enhance research capacity and synergy of efforts among interested faculty regarding media and communications related to transition countries.
