Current research

My research lies at the intersection between internet infrastructure studies, digital and data economy, and communication policy and is theoretically grounded in political economy, media ecology/medium theory, and institutional history. I am interested in the ongoing evolution and institutionalisation of the internet and my research generally aims at documenting, analysing, and understanding this critical turning point in the history of communication. More specifically, it uncovers the often-hidden ecologies, power structures, and modes of governance that are built into internet infrastructures by focusing on for instance backbone networks, digital distribution systems, websites and apps, and data harvesting. As such, my research spans and combines theoretical, methodological, and empirical approaches to studying emergent digital infrastructures, markets and policies as fundational, structural conditions for communication.
